Least Useful Book on the Subject
This historical sketch and scattery how-to, completely without illustration, is really a dozen-page come-on for the catalog of patterns you can buy, and the information that you can get your fabrics and threads through the author, as well. "In preparing this book," as she calls the pamphlet, "the author has not deemed it necessary to describe the different stitches mentioned as necessary to perfect a needle painting." While she might suggest the colour of fabric to use behind a snow scene, she also says of more complex landscapes, "As to the colors for foliage in a picture like this, the study of nature is the best guide. In fact, nature may be said to be the best teacher to the studen in art in regard to both color and form."
So you don't need to waste time on this. Get one of the better books in the Archive (artneedlework00brai or artneedleworkfor00sava or ladysbookonartem00perk), or just go out and look at things.
